Book Review: Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson

Genre : Young Adult, Contemporary, Travel, Romance
Format : eBook
Rating : 5/5 stars

All the pleasant views that passed me by, had left me hungry with American burgers sigh.

I know I don’t make sense but this is what I felt after reading this book. A light and enjoyable read!

Amy was suppose to stick to the travel plan that her mom planned out for her to get their car from California to Connecticut — west coast to east coast — now that’s a long journey! And since it wasn’t long after grieving for her dad’s loss in a car accident, Amy wasn’t ready to get behind the wheel.

That’s where Roger came in — as an old family friend according to mom — but Amy don’t remember him and he was no more than a stranger to her. Roger needs to make that trip too and he will be driving with Amy across country.

I was so excited to start this book and surely it didn’t disappoint. That’s an adventure of a lifetime!! A road trip across the wide continent!! Wow and I felt like I have traveled America with them.

There are so many things I loved about this book. The author has thrown in a music playlist for traveling, some actual snippets of diner receipts, park tickets and pieces of travel memoirs great for scrapbooking.

Lots of lovely quotes that represents each state they dropped by. Here’s a beautiful one when they reached Yosemite for a stopover.

I’d like to dream my troubles all away on a bed of California stars. — Wilco

Thanks to the author I also know more of each state’s history and motto.

I absolutely have to rave about the part where they hit the famous Route 50!! As the cashier of the gas station greeted them “Welcome to the Loneliest Road in America.” I was almost hyperventilating hahahaha! I was so absorbed reading their journey and the scenery that passed them by, how I wish I was there and thanks Ms. Matson for making every traveler’s dream come true!!

Route 50

I can’t stop loving this book because there seemed to be more to Roger than meets the eye. Well did they stick to Amy’s original plan? I guess the book title speaks that much 😀 And that’s the fun part about the whole story.

I love reading the bond that formed between Amy and Roger, slowly, surely, some conflicts thrown in between yet they came out stronger than before.

Oh, I should just stop and travel to America!! 😛 Two youngsters, one unforgettable road trip and a journey of growth and acceptance. This is definitely one of the feel good books to look out for!
